ICE DAMS

What You Need to Know About Ice Dams
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.
Varying temperatures on the roof's surface cause ice dams. Heat coming from the inside of the house causes the upper part of the roof to be warmer. This may be caused by poor insulation. The heat from the house to the attic causes snow that is on the roof to melt. When the water from the snow meets the colder temperature of the lower roof, it freezes causing an ice dam to form. You may notice icicles hanging from the edge of the roof.
In order to prevent ice dams from forming, you must ensure that heat does not escape from the house and into the attic. Recessed lights, skylights, complicated roof designs, and heating ducts in the attic will all increase the risk of ice dam formation.
